Baye
Kemit is the founder and Principal of The Garvey School, an independent
African-centered high school founded in 2003 and Egun Omode Shule (Children
of the ancestors school), an independent African-centered pre-school
to 8th grade founded in 2007, both are located in Trenton, NJ. The Garvey
School/Egun Omode Shule is the only fully comprehensive (pre-school
through 12th grade) African-centered school in the state of NJ. Baba
Baye runs the shule with his wife, Makeda, and together they have 5
children.
Baye is a 1996 graduate of Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA,
where he received a degree in History Education. In 2002, Baye received
his master’s degree in Education Administration from Temple University
in Philadelphia, PA.
In 2006, Baba Baye received the Dorothy V. Palmer award for "Excellence in Education" named in honor of Mayor Douglas H. Palmer's (Mayor of Trenton, NJ) mother. In the same year, The Garvey School graduated its 1st student, Radhiya Abdul-Raheem. Radhiya is currently a junior at Rutgers University.
Baye is currently co-facilitator of the Council of Independent Black Institutions (CIBI), a professor of African-American History at Mercer County Community College and also a Baba l'orisa (Priest) of Olokun in the Yoruba (0risa) tradition. As principal, teacher, father, professor and priest, Baye remains committed to reafrikanization, family development, and nationbuilding as a means to sovereignty for African people. Ase ooooo!
